Drum handling for the safe handling of hazardous materials

Safe handling of hazardous materials in drums is essential to prevent accidents and protect workers' health. This section explains how to ensure safe handling and which accessories are available for drum handling. Specialised equipment such as drum lifters with explosion protection, forklift attachments as well as drum hangers, drum tongs and drum grippers are also shown.

What does the safe handling of hazardous materials in drums entail?

Hazardous materials are always a hot topic for every manufacturing company, every craft business and all laboratories, as accidents must be prevented and insurance cover must not be carelessly gambled away.

Legislation rightly requires compliance with regulations and laws when handling materials that may pose a risk to people and the environment.

There are currently numerous legal regulations governing the storage, transport and handling of hazardous materials, depending on the risks they pose. Hazardous materials are often stored in drums. These drums and other containers must not only be stored and transported safely. The protection of people and the environment is also a top priority when filling and decanting. DENIOS develops and produces a wide range of products and technical solutions for all drum handling tasks - whether lifting, moving, turning, tilting or emptying.

What accessories are available for handling drums?

There is a wide range of accessories for handling drums that make transport and handling easier and safer. The most important aids include:

Manual drum transport

  • Drum trolleys: These are specially designed to transport drums manually. They enable easy handling and ensure safe transport over short distances.

Drum lifters: Drum lifters are used to lift and move drums without the need for physical effort. They are particularly useful when drums need to be lifted into or taken down from shelves.

Drum transport with forklifts

  • Drum grippers: These devices are attached to the forklift truck and enable the safe gripping and lifting of drums. They provide stability and prevent the drum from slipping during transport.

  • Drum lifters: Drum lifters are specially developed for use with forklifts and allow drums to be lifted and moved easily. They are ideal for fast and efficient transport in storage and production environments.

  • Drum turners: Drum turners can be used to turn and tilt drums, which is particularly useful for emptying or mixing contents. These devices offer safe and controlled handling.

For suspension in crane systems

  • Drum hangers: These lifting devices are attached to crane systems and enable the safe lifting and moving of drums in a vertical direction. They are ideal for use in warehouses or production areas where drums need to be lifted frequently.

  • Drum tongs: Drum tongs grip the drum securely and firmly so that it can be lifted and transported with a crane. They offer a robust solution for the safe transport of heavy drums.

  • Drum grippers: These grippers are designed to hold the drum with a scissor movement. They are versatile and offer a reliable way of moving drums with a crane.

These accessories ensure efficient, safe and ergonomic handling of drums in various industrial applications.

Drum lifters with explosion protection

Three elements are required to trigger an explosion in a potentially explosive atmosphere: Fuel (gas or dust), oxygen, and an ignition source (e.g. spark, hot surface, short circuit, etc.). The risk of an explosion is based on the probability of the simultaneous presence of fuel (concentration of ignitable gases, vapours or dust particles) and oxygen over a certain period of time (defined by zones). A range of explosion-proof DENIOS equipment ensures that potential ignition sources do not materialise. In this way, the risk of an explosion is completely eliminated - for example with the help of a drum lifter with explosion protection.

Forklift attachments

In order to make the necessary transport on the company premises as economical as possible, it is best to use equipment that can be attached to existing forklifts, for example. Large drum loads can thus be handled conveniently - even over longer distances on the company premises. You will find a large selection of forklift attachments in our shop.

Drum hangers, drum tongs and drum grippers

With the drum hanger for upright or horizontal drums, you can effortlessly lift and transport a 200-litre steel beaded drum. The sturdy drum hanger consists of a chain construction with two special gripping hooks for picking up the drum. Drum grippers also enable practical transport of steel beaded and clamping ring drums. Alternatively, drum tongs can be used for lifting and transporting. Particularly clever and labour-saving: most of these drum lifting devices are designed so that they automatically release the drum as soon as it touches the ground after being lowered.
