Being prepared for an emergency means having procedures and response equipment in place at all times. This is especially true when handling liquids that are hazardous to water and the environment, such as oils or chemicals. Things can easily go wrong in everyday tasks such as filling and dispensing, when a container is leaking, or during maintenance work on machines and systems. It is important to prevent even the smallest quantities from entering the environment. With the right absorbent material, you can do this and save money in the process.
Absorbent materials absorb spilled liquids, bind them in their structure and therefore make them easier to dispose of. Classic areas of use are in the manufacturing industry, or also in fire brigade and disaster control operations. Whenever oils, chemicals or other hazardous substances could endanger work safety, disrupt work processes or enter the environment, absorbent materials should be kept close at hand. With DENSORB®, DENIOS has put together a broad range of absorbent materials that meets all these applications. You can also get our emergency response spill kits which offer portable, quick access to the essentials.
DENSORB® absorbent materials are available in Oil, Universal and Special variants. DENSORB® Oil is used for absorbing oils and other hydrocarbon-based liquids. Water is not absorbed, making DENSORB® Oil suitable for use on water. Alternatively, granules for oil absorption are available. DENSORB® Universal is suitable for absorbing coolants, solvents, emulsions and other non-aggressive liquid chemicals. For the absorption of acids and alkalis, use DENSORB® Special. The absorbent mats absorb aggressive chemicals and are particularly useful if you are not sure which substance has leaked.
All DENSORB® absorbent materials are available in the form of socks, cushions, mats and rolls (or all together in spill kits). Socks are suitable for containing liquids, cushions absorb larger quantities and rolls can be used to cover large areas. Mats can be used to collect spilled liquids quickly and easily. The absorbent and tear-resistant DENSORB® absorbent mats are made of polypropylene fibres and can absorb oils up to 16 times their own weight. Rolls and mats are covered with a low-lint or lint-free protective layer, depending on the design.
Choosing the right absorbent material is quite easy. Our absorbent materials guide provides helpful answers to frequently asked questions. Chemical and oil absorbent materials themselves do not pose a safety risk. However, absorbent mats take on the properties of the absorbed liquid. Used chemical and oil absorbents materials must be disposed of in accordance with statutory regulations. The liquid absorbed is the important factor. An absorbent mat contaminated with oil must therefore be treated in accordance with the oil disposal/used oil disposal regulations. Information on this can be obtained from the responsible offices (Water Authority, Environment Agency).
Chemical and oil absorbent materials should be protected from long term exposure to UV and need to be kept dry. Temperature is not an important factor for storage as their melting temperature is 170° C. When these criteria are met, the absorbent materials may be stored for a long time.
