Classic fume cupboards have a suction device in the rear area, which is used to extract volatile hazardous substances such as gases, dusts or aerosols from the air. In the front area, an adjustable protective pane, the so-called sash, separates the operator from the interior of the fume cupboard. Depending on the model, the sash can be moved manually or electrically to allow access to the working area.
In fume cupboards with ejector technology, special nozzles on the front edge of the worktop and in the ceiling area direct air jets, so-called ejectors, specifically to the extraction strip in the rear wall. The resulting air currents propel hazardous substances such as vapours, aerosols, gases or dusts towards the rear wall, where they are safely extracted in a targeted manner. The front area is openly accessible to the operator.
Both fume cupboards with sash and fume cupboards with ejector technology offer a high level of protection against so-called volatile hazardous substances (e.g. vapours, gases, aerosols or dusts). The design of the fume cupboard according to DIN EN 14175 confirms that it meets the corresponding requirements of the laboratory guidelines. In the case of a fume cupboard with sash, the effectiveness of the protection is very much reliant upon it being used correctly by each individual. To be able to work inside the fume cupboard, the sash must be opened. This should always be limited to the extent necessary for the work. The more the sash is opened, the more the retention capacity and the robustness of the fume cupboard are impaired. In practice, this can quickly lead to errors in handling the fume cupboard that impair its protective effect. In fume cupboards with ejector technology, the entire front is open throughout - but the stable air curtain, which is created by targeted blowing in the front area, ensures effective separation of the working area and the surroundings. And thus for a consistently high protection effect.
Thanks to the flow design, which has been tried and tested over many years, the air barrier remains stable even when the employee reaches through it into the work area. Protection against physical hazards If there is a risk of hazardous substances being splashed or glass splinters flying around, only a fume cupboard with a safety pane offers you sufficient protection. The same applies to the danger of explosions. Before you buy a fume cupboard, you should take a close look at your experimental setup and consider possible physical hazards when deriving protective measures. In terms of usability and efficiency, fume cupboards with ejector technology offer clear advantages over models with a sash. The further the sash of the classic fume cupboard is closed, the more it impairs the working area. In contrast, hazardous substance workplaces with ejector technology have an open front area as standard, which enables barrier-free and ergonomic working. Large containers and even bulky laboratory equipment can be brought in without any problems. In addition, with classic fume cupboards, it is essential to ensure that the sash is closed again when the work is finished. Before starting work, the sash must be correctly adjusted. These measures, which delay the work process, are not necessary with fume cupboards equipped with ejector technology instead of a sash.
A fume cupboard with an open sash is associated with increased energy consumption. This is because the volume flow and the exhaust air volume regulation must be adjusted according to the sash position. This results in a higher exhaust air volume that must be processed via the ventilation system of the laboratory or the building. And the treatment of the air is usually expensive. A fume cupboard with ejector technology offers better energy efficiency here. Although the units perform a lot, they consume significantly lower amounts of exhaust air compared to conventional fume cupboards.
