BS EN 14470-1:2004 Hazardous material cabinets

The European standard BS EN 14470-1, passed in April 2004, defines the terms of the storage in safety cabinets (< 1cbm capacity). The cabinet's fire resistance has to be proven through the means of a fire test (type checking) in accordance with DIN EN 14470-1. Since the implementation of the BS EN 14470-2, similar regulations have to be obeyed in storing gas cylinders. The fire resistance is classified as G30 or G60.

BS EN 15154 Safety emergency showers

The European Committee for Standardization CEN passed a European standard for emergency showers. The new EN 15154 is currently divided into two sections. Part 1 for "body showers with water connection in laboratories" Part 2 for "eye showers with water connection", Part 1 for "body showers without water connection", Part 2 for "eye showers without water connection" and Part 1 for "body showers with water connection in production sites".

BS 476-20:1987 Fire tests on building materials and structures

Fire tests on building materials and structures. Method for determination of the fire resistance of elements of construction (general principles).

Related standards BS 476-21:1987, -22, -23.

This British Standard, a part of the BS 476 series, describes a procedure for a laboratory test for the determination of fire resistance of elements of construction when subjected to defined heating and pressure conditions.

The method provides a means of quantifying the ability of elements to withstand exposure to high temperatures, by setting criteria by which the load-bearing capacity, the fire containment (integrity) and the thermal

transmittance (insulation) functions can be adjudged.

A representative sample of the element is exposed to a specified regime of heating and the performance of the test sample is monitored on the basis of criteria described in the standard. Fire resistance of the test element is expressed as the time for which appropriate criteria have been satisfied. The times so obtained are a measure of the adequacy of the construction in a fire but have no direct relationship with the duration of a real fire.
