Protective Glasses from DENIOS

When to use eye protection

Eye protection may be needed in many different circumstances. Any manufacturing work – particularly when tools may cause dust, particles or sparks – will require safety goggles. If your operations include science-based activities whether in labs or in schools, colleges or hospitals: those taking part in these pursuits are also likely to need good protective glasses to prevent chemicals or other foreign bodies from entering the eye. This list is by no means exhaustive, and effective eye protection should always be worn if there is any likelihood of danger to the eye.

Eye safety is a key part of environmental protection with failure being potentially catastrophic. The worst-case scenario for an eye injury is permanent sight loss while even lesser injuries may reduce eyesight. Providing sufficient eye protection for your workers is essential and it is also a good idea to have spares in case of breakages or to protect visitors to the premises. As a leading supplier of workplace safety equipment, you can be sure the protective glasses from DENIOS UK are of a high standard and comply with the relevant EN166 legislation.

Make sure everyone knows when to wear safety goggles by displaying prominent warning signs and inspect the glasses regularly for any signs of wear and tear which may reduce their efficiency. Because no matter how effective the safety equipment, accidents can still happen, so ensure that emergency first aid is easily available by installing eye wash stations and having eye wash bottles easily available.

Which safety goggles are right for you?

Safety glasses come in a variety of different designs that should be worn according to the work environment. Which safety goggles are suitable and when, can be decided on the basis of their coding. This consists of six elements:

  • Filter type: It describes whether and against which irradiation the glasses protect.
  • Tint level: It indicates whether the glasses themselves are tinted and if so, in which shade.
  • Manufacturer's abbreviation: It represents the shortened manufacturer's name.
  • Optical class: The safety goggles are subject to a classification that indicates how high the visual performance requirements are.
  • Mechanical strength: It shows how resistant the safety glasses are to mechanical influences.
  • Other protective marking: They indicate other protective features that do not fall under the other categories, such as arcing or reflection.

Furthermore, the glasses also differ in the frame. Models with temples are suitable protective eyewear for spectacle wearers, as they can simply be worn over the regular visual aid. Although full-vision glasses tightly enclose the eye area, they are also usually suitable for people who wear their spectacles.

The range of DENIOS UK eye protection

DENIOS UK stocks a wide range of protective eyewear, all of which is designed with comfort and a good fit in mind. Options include single lens safety glasses which are anti-mist and scratchproof, ideal for protecting the eyes during occupations such as soldering and grinding. Our inventory also includes safety goggles which are suitable for wearers of glasses and are chemical resistant. Gases and fumes can get past many types of protective eye gear, so if this is likely to be a hazard in your workplace, opt for anti-gas safety goggles with a secure seal to keep the eyes safe from the irritation and injury caused by gas. Stocking well-regarded brands, including 3M, Honeywell and Uvex, there is certain to be a type of eye protection suitable for your needs in our range.

Tinted or clear safety glasses?

Every production site has its own requirements - also for safety goggles. The right tint is particularly important. Untinted lenses are colourless, with a light transmission value above 74 %, so a lot of light gets through. The colour spectrum remains fully intact and vision is largely unobstructed. Safety glasses without tinting are used wherever realistic vision is important, for example in colour production. Here, they offer protection against impacting parts such as splashes or dust.

Tinted lenses, on the other hand, have a filter effect that provides additional protection against ultraviolet radiation, glare or infrared radiation. The tints range from yellow, orange, red, green to several shades of blue. The different tints are useful in specific contexts. An example: Sight glasses in the colour green are mainly used for welding, cutting or burning.

The tint has a balancing effect and protects the eyes from the bright light of welding and cutting work. In addition to the tint, there is also an infrared filter in this case. The abbreviations IR 1.7, IR 3, IR 5 and IR 7 indicate the specific range of tasks from welding aid to oxyacetylene cutting.

Employer's obligations in detail

As part of the risk assessment, which is mandatory for every workplace and in every company under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, an assessor determines all potential hazards for employees. The provision of safety equipment is one of the operator's obligations under this law. According to this directive, an employer must prove that the safety equipment provided, i.e. also the safety goggles, is of an appropriate quality and complies with the applicable European standard. In the DENIOS range you will find products from well-known manufacturers such as 3M, Honeywell and UVEX.
